Fun fact: Did you know YHF is made up of an all-female creative team? This International Women's Day, YHF is bringing it to you raw and real in our exclusive Girl2Girl campaign, a brazen call to elevate and celebrate womanhood that shows up proudly and authentically, with a look into some of our team members’ lives at YHF and how they’re facing hard lessons and finding empowerment in their own ways.
In this raw, tell-all series, we’re pulling the curtains and sharing what goes on behind the scenes at YHF, from the designing of our pieces to the content planning and photoshoots, that we hope will shed some light on how the little things give us confidence, joy, and a sense of accomplishment; a sense that we believe all our Rule Breakers and Risk Takers can speak to in your own ways by being your real and unapologetic selves.
Watch our series unfold as we count down to International Women’s Day this 8 March (scroll to the bottom for each episode).
In addition, we’re getting down to the nitty-gritty with our biggest star and badass founder, Winnie Ong, on how she started off in her younger days, standing up for her unapologetic sense of fashion in a world that didn’t represent her, to how she’s changing the game for the bold non-conformists by building the YHF community, and pouring her heart and soul into a brand that’s set to be by your side through every phase, mood, and version.
What inspired you to start Young Hungry Free?
W: Honestly, it started out of pure frustration. When I was around 17 or 18, I looked at the local fashion scene and everything just felt so… cookie-cutter. Everyone was wearing the exact same basic stuff, and it just wasn't me. So, I started upcycling my own clothes. I’d take basic denim shorts and completely distress them, add chains, embellishments, anything to make them feel like it's mine.
Through that whole process, it hit me: the fashion scene here wasn’t representing people like us. The ones who didn't want to blend in. Young Hungry Free was born out of that rebellion. I wanted to create a safe haven for individuals who want to stand out, be loud, and stay fiercely true to themselves in a society that’s obsessed with conformity.
What does International Women’s Day mean to you?
W: To me, IWD is a megaphone for what we should be celebrating every single day: women pushing boundaries, breaking the rules, and carving out their own paths. It’s a celebration of the raw strength, creativity, and resilience we bring to the table.
At YHF, our entire DNA is built on tearing up labels and stereotypes, risk-taking and rule-breaking. Equality isn't just a buzzword for us; it’s recognising that every woman has her own unique voice, and she deserves the absolute freedom to express it without apologising for it.
What sparked this year's Girl2Girl series?W: Community has always been the heartbeat of YHF. Honestly, every day is International Women’s Day around here! But we also know our community goes beyond just women; we are for him, her, and everyone in between. For this year's Girl2Girl series, we wanted to get real. We wanted to pass the mic and share our actual, hard-earned experiences to elevate one another. Whether it’s navigating personal challenges or hustling in your professional life, the goal is to share the real tea, the learnings, and the skills we've picked up, so we can all level up together. What challenges have you faced as a founder trying to create this community?W: The hardest part is getting people to drop their armour. We live in an environment where fitting in feels so much safer than standing out, so not everyone feels confident being their authentic selves right off the bat. As a founder, I had to learn that building a real community isn't just about selling clothes; it’s about understanding that struggle. It’s about creating a space where people genuinely feel seen, accepted, and hyped up. It takes a lot of time and consistency to build that trust, but when someone finally feels like they belong here? That makes every hurdle worth it. |

How has running a business allowed you as a woman to give back?
W: It starts from within the walls of YHF. Running this business has let me build a space where women can actually grow creatively and confidently. Our team is made up mostly of women, and I’ve worked hard to foster an environment where they aren't afraid to throw out wild ideas, experiment, and express themselves.
Beyond our HQ, I want to empower our community. Fashion isn’t just fabric you throw on; it’s your armour. It’s how you introduce yourself to the world before you even speak. Giving back, to me, is sharing that energy of freedom, boldness, and unapologetic self-expression with every person who puts on our clothes.
What advice would you give women building something of their own?
W: Stop asking for permission and just do it your own way. Building your own thing is going to test you in ways you didn't even know were possible, but it is also the most honest, raw, and fulfilling ride you will ever take.
When you stop following someone else’s blueprint and trust your own vision, the journey actually means something. Even the messy, difficult moments just become part of the badass story you get to tell later.

What do you hope women of all ages feel when they come to YHF?W: I want them to feel exactly what our name says: Young, Hungry, and Free. I want them to feel forever young in spirit, completely free from society's exhausting expectations, and hungry to take on the world. Our customers grow and evolve, and we want YHF to be that constant hype-girl they can always return to. I love the idea that our clothes become part of their core memories. If someone chooses to wear YHF during a major milestone in their life, especially when they need to feel invincible, that means everything to me. Do you see fashion as a tool of empowerment, and how should it be used?W: Hell yes. Fashion is the ultimate tool for empowerment because it lets you show the world exactly who you are without having to say a single word. When you feel genuinely confident in your outfit, your whole posture changes. The way you walk into a room changes. True empowerment isn't about dressing for the male gaze or following a trend; it’s about putting on something that feels 100% authentic to you and owning it completely. |
What’s next for you and the brand?
W: We’re entering a completely new era of YHF. Right now, we are pouring all of our energy into our upcoming collections, and let me tell you, we are pushing the boundaries further than ever before.
Our community is growing and evolving, and our clothes are evolving right alongside them. We’re working on some of the most exciting, rule-breaking designs we’ve ever created. Think bolder silhouettes, fiercer concepts, and pieces that are 100% unapologetic. We want everyone who wears YHF to feel forever young, hungry, and free, and our next drops are going to make sure you look the part. Stay tuned.
